Irrespective of the sector, or company we have observed a custom and practice for those businesses to frequently appoint people into critical roles, with a responsibility for people management, based primarily on their experience, or technical knowledge,  rather than the specific competencies necessary to successfully manage people.

 

This flaw is never more apparent than when selecting operational managers whose prime and most demanding responsibility is leading people who, more often than not, are required to deliver service to the customer. This often flies in the face of the organisations own recruitment and selection processes.

 

 Peter Raza: Director (FCIPD):

Peter has a wealth of experience working in the transport construction and consultancy sectors, where he has operated at Director level affecting change with some extraordinary results.

 

Prior to establishing Peak Practice HR Consulting Ltd, Peter occupied a number of senior roles within the rail sector including, HR Director Gatwick Express, as it embarked upon the massive change process associated with being the 'fast track' passnger rail franchise, as the UK rail industry embarked upon privatisation. Peter was also HR Director at Balfour Beatty Rail Maintenance Ltd, the largest rail infrastructure company in the UK, where he led the delicate and at times tough negotiations with the rail unions that secured the most cost effective Ts&Cs within the market.

 

For several years Peter combined leading the Peak Practice consultancy with the role of Divisional HR Director, within the SSP group (the food travel experts), where he has been instrumental in driving substantial change in the people metrics of the business.

 

Peter is a qualified coach and uses this experience to obtain exceptional results, whether it be in the learning environment, or driving performance through specific short-term projects.

 

Barry Brown: Director (FCIPD):

A highly experienced Human Resources, Operations and Business professional with many years experience operating at Board and top team level within highly unionised transportation, engineering and customer service environments.

 

At Midland Mainline Ltd Train Operating Company he held the Directors portfolio between 1996 and 2004 for HR, Customer Service, IT, Station Operations, investment and development, in this highly successful and award winning Premier railway business of the United Kingdom

 

Barry has also undertaken a range of assignments to help businesses and organisations with significant change management projects and engagement strategies to deliver significant cultural shifts. These companies include:

Since 2004 he has been an Independent Member of judicial appointments panels for the Judicial Appointments Commission (Lord Chancellors Office).  Panels undertaken, operating on a CBI and competency basis, include Circuit Judges, Recorders, Medical Members of Mental Health Tribunal, Chairmen of ETs & Chairmen of Rent Tribunals.
